With people pay more and more attention to environment protection, the word “degradation “ begins to appear in our lives. Biodegradable paper lids/ trays are widely used in more and more stores. This behavior not only is good for our health but for our environment. It’s worthy of changing.

What are the biodegradable materials?

At present, it is mainly divided into four categories: PLA, PHA, PBS and  PBAT.

✅Polylactic acid: one of the most common degradable plastics polymerized with lactic acid as the main raw material. The production process of polylactic acid is pollution-free and the product is biodegradable. The waste polylactic acid can be decomposed into carbon dioxide and water after being composted above 55℃ or enriched with oxygen and microorganisms, realizing the material circulation in nature without any impact on the environment.

✅PBS: Polycondensation of succinic acid and 1,4-butanediol. The raw material is petroleum or biological resource fermentation. PBS is easily decomposed into carbon dioxide and water by a variety of microorganisms or enzymes in nature, and has good biocompatibility, bioabsorption and heat resistance.

✅PBAT: It is a thermoplastic degradable plastic. It is usually produced by petrochemical or biological fermentation from fatty acids and butanediol. It has good ductility and elongation at break, as well as good heat resistance and impact properties.

✅PHA: PHA degradable plastics include polyhydroxy fatty acid ester (PHA), poly 3 hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and other categories. The degradation mode of PHA is very special. After PHA is used, it can be completely degraded into β-hydroxybutyric acid, carbon dioxide and water in the body.

In fact, except for biodegradable, the word “compostable” may be also familiar to us. How to distinguish them? Let’s discuss it together.

The differences between biodegradable and compostable

biodegradable

adjective

  1. Substances or objects that can be decomposed by bacteria or other organisms

compostable

adjective

  1. Something that can be used as compost when it rots

This means that biodegradable items can be broken down in the environment with the help of bacteria or other organisms. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's good for the environment. For example, some plastic bags can biodegrade into small pieces in about 20 years, but they are still bad for the environment.

Also, if something is compostable, it means it's made of organic material, and it can be completely broken down into nutrient-rich compost.

Fortunately, we Sowinpak biodegradable paper lids/ trays all are made from organic material, which is can react chemically with surroundings to form carbon dioxide and water, that will not pollute environment.

Why do we use biodegradable paper lids/ trays?

During this fast-paced modern era, fast food has become a necessity in most people’s lives. Thousands of disposable lids and trays are consumed every day, if things go on like this, more and more rubbish will appear around us. So we should take action to protect our home. As an alternative of traditional plastic trays or lids, biodegradable  paper lids/ trays work.

When thrown away, they become degradable waste. "Degradable waste" refers to organic waste that can be broken down naturally. Mainly including: paper, wood, plants, food, etc., under the action of microorganisms, eventually form carbon dioxide, water and other natural common forms of compounds.
